Spent two incredibly productive and enjoyable days with the IATA Human Factors Task Force in Montreal, thanks to the excellent planning and organization by IATA’s Antonella Cavacini. We delved into strategies for making qualitative crew fatigue indicators actionable, sharing best practices and impressive insights on topics such as crew rest, performance dashboards, and human-factor-focused safety management processes, including some insightful approaches from Down Under. Very impressive Louise Kirkwood (née Daly)!
A huge thank you to Jim Mangie for his many years of leadership as chair of the task force, and to Johanna Tikanmäki, who is now taking the helm. With Slawko Borys as vice chair and Jim continuing as an SME, we are set to carry forward this important work, enhancing safety in airline operations. I’m particularly passionate about developing a taxonomy and balanced Fatigue Safety Performance Indicators to help navigate the complexities of fatigue management in the airline industry. With this outstanding team, I am confident that we will soon have updated and enhanced valuable SPI guidance material to support the industry in this critical area.
